Why Are Elevators Afraid Of Water And Garbage?

Jan 30, 2024

Why are elevators afraid of water?
In recent years, the rainstorm brought by typhoon has flooded many buildings in the urban area, making many elevators "paralyzed".
Someone is curious: why is the elevator structure made of metal afraid of water?

We also often find people pouring dirty water or other liquids (such as beverages) into elevator cars, and some people sweeping water into the shaft while cleaning the hallway. They thought the shaft was just a hollow. They were unaware that there were many mechanical and electrical components installed on the top, bottom, and below the landing door sill of the elevator car.
These water or other liquids flowing into the car roof, bottom, or landing door mechanism will not only cause rusting of these components, but more importantly, will cause the failure of electrical components installed in these areas. During typhoons, many elevators become paralyzed due to water entering the pit, causing electrical failures in the pit. There are also many wires and circuit boards arranged on the elevator car and landing door. Water ingress can cause insulation reduction of electrical appliances and wires, resulting in electric leakage. Such elevators are very dangerous to put into operation and can cause electric shock accidents for passengers.
Leakage can also cause more serious damage to the elevator control system. For example, causing the computer board to burn out. So if there is water ingress or wetting of the elevator, the power supply of the elevator must be suspended, and the water should be cleaned and dried as soon as possible. Professional maintenance personnel should test the circuit before it can be put into use.
Why are elevators afraid of garbage?
"Garbage" appears to be just a hygiene issue on the surface. Some people develop a habit of not paying attention to hygiene and are accustomed to littering and cigarette butts everywhere. So it is common to find household waste such as fruit peels, cigarette butts, and leftover food in the elevator car. Some passenger elevators are also used to transport building materials, resulting in a lot of construction waste inside the car, such as broken bricks, cement dust, etc.

These garbage are not just a hygiene issue for elevators, they may cause them to "strike" and stop running.
Many elevator users may not be aware of this, but many elevator maintenance personnel have a deep feeling that they often encounter some maintenance elevators that malfunction and cannot operate. When maintenance personnel arrive at the site, they find that the cause of the malfunction is simply "garbage".
Before starting the elevator, it is necessary to automatically check whether the door is closed properly. If the door is not completely closed, even if it is just a little short, the elevator will not start. So a cigarette butt and a small stone can stop the elevator from running. Some elevator doors use light curtains, or infrared devices, as anti-collision devices. Once the infrared is blocked, the elevator will not close the door and stop running. A small piece of fruit peel, chewing gum, or even cement dust can block the infrared.
Some people even sweep the garbage from the hallway into the elevator shaft without realizing that the elevator is just an electromechanical device. Just like the air conditioning and TV at home, excessive dust can affect work. Similarly, many electrical switches up and down the elevator will also have poor contact due to dirt, resulting in continuous elevator problems.
So in order for elevators to operate well, the first step is to have a good operating environment and pay attention to hygiene.
